Shaun, Belinda and Reremoana shared their journey and reflections on weaving Māori and Western leadership perspectives. Together, they explored:
- Barriers that weren’t: Many of the challenges they anticipated—like discomfort, resistance, or lack of capability—proved to be less significant than expected. Instead, they found openness, curiosity, and a hunger for meaningful leadership development.
- What’s helped: Building trust through relationships, embracing discomfort while ensuring safety, and co-facilitating with authenticity have been key to delivering impactful, inclusive programmes.
- Opportunities ahead: There’s a growing need to support Māori leaders, create leadership spaces that reflect Māori values, and move beyond tokenism to genuine, values-based leadership that empowers all.
The kōrero also highlighted the importance of:
- Creating leadership programmes that reflect and resonate with Māori identity and experience.
- Supporting non-Māori leaders to step into Te Tiriti-based leadership roles with humility and courage.
- Holding space for real, relational conversations that centre people, not just performance.
