I am an advocate for the transformative power of culture, heritage, language and storytelling, which has shaped my approach to coaching and supporting others. Vanessa is an Associate with Te Arahanga o Ngā Iwi. She currently Chairs the National Palliative Care Steering Group with Te Whatu Ora, is a member of Te Roopū Taki Māori with Hospice NZ, provides advice to Tu Ora Compass Health. Her most recent role was Director Health Equity with Mary Potter Hospice where she spent 13 years. With a background in nursing, she has led and developed several programmes relating to loss and grief for Māori and compassionate communities, Māori models of care and collaborations with iwi. Vanessa has contributed to national research, publications and professional development material. She is a qualified bi-cultural supervisor.  Vanessa is Wellington born and of Rongomaiwahine and Ngāti Kahungūnu descent.

Rongomaiwahine, Te Arawa, Ngati Tuwharetoa  Tui dreams big and has a can do attitude.  She has recently taken up the role of Tumuaki – Chief Executive of Te Matarau a Maui (Wellington’s Māori economic development agency).  She is also the founder of Bird Island, a boutique consultancy focused on innovation for global good.   Tui’s extensive work experience includes international business, investment, economic development and start-ups.  She has a proven track record establishing internationally recognised innovation programmes including the foundation work on the Lightning Lab, the blueprint for business acceleration in Aotearoa, Mahuki, the world’s first business accelerator for the museum sector, and she recently worked on the inaugural respectful ageing innovation challenge for the Selwyn Foundation. Formerly, the lead of the Māori enterprise team for New Zealand’s international trade agency she supported the export aspirations of major indigenous entities and provided in-market support to NZ exporters as Trade Commissioner Melbourne. She has extensive experience in the culture and heritage sector supporting efforts to tell our nation’s rich stories and has been an international speaker on innovation in the culture and heritage sector.   Her current directorships include the Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington, Endometriosis NZ and the Dev Academy.
